An immersion in Clermont-Ferrand, the Auvergne capital city and its jewels from Michelin and so much more…

Clermont-Ferrant is a modern city, born from the union, back in the seventeenth century, of two former rival cities, Clermont and Montferrand. The city of Augustonemetum appears after the disappearance of the metropolis Arverne Nemossos. It then took the name of Arvernis then Clermont. At the beginning of the twelfth century, the Counts of Auvergne founded the competing city of Montferrand. In 1630, Louis XIII imposed, by the edict of Troyes, the unification of the two neighboring cities. This union would be reaffirmed by Louis XV in 1731. 

A city of industrial tradition, Clermont-Ferrand hosts one of the world’s two largest tire manufacturers (Michelin of course), this Auvergne capital city is also well positioned in the pharmaceutical, agri-food and aerospace industries. Moreover, it hosts three competitiveness clusters. The city is also located at the foot of the Limagne fault and the chain of Puys, natural site inscribed since July 2018 as “high place tectonic” in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Discover L’Aventure Michelin museum in Clermont-Ferrand, a cultural center about the History of the famous tyre saga of the Michelin brothers since their beginnings, in their hometown. On the occasion of its 120th anniversary, the Michelin group opened the doors of L’Aventure Michelin. A place dedicated to the history and memory of the emblematic company, located a few steps away to the mythical homonym Marcel Michelin stadium. The preservation of historical heritage has always been a major concern for Michelin. Already in the 1930s, Marcel Michelin kept in the research laboratories testimonials from the past. Until 2005, Michelin had a B company museum whose access was restricted since, only open to employees, customers and partners of the company.

Confronted with a problem of bringing buildings up to standard and as part of a heritage enhancement policy, Édouard Michelin decided to move the museum, to rethink the environment and the operating strategy. Beyond the concern for the preservation of archives, the aim was to give meaning to this investment by promoting the group’s heritage and especially by sharing it. The industrial site of Cataroux in Clermont-Ferrand is then chosen. On January 27th, 2009, after a huge inventory, digitization and document security work, the Aventure Michelin center was inaugurated. In this way, in this 2,000 sq. surface, is traced the history of the company, the technological evolutions of its products, its know-how, but also Michelin’s social policy.

The tire story has just begun. in 1899, the first car to cross will be the symbolic 100 km/h. The medical profession thought it was dangerous. in less than 10 years, the Michelin brothers go from a bicycle tire to a tire that travels more than 100 km/h, they had an incredible spirit of innovation. But they also knew how to observe things, analyze them and adapt. We are in the 1910s. Why a moment, the Michelin brothers decide to carve the tires? Left to leave a trace on the road, they draw on the tire surface an M for Michelin. they see during the tests that this sculpture can gain in adhesion. Discover the Art side of the city, within the Musée Roger Quilliot (MARQ)… In the heart of the historic district of Montferrand, the former Ursuline convent, of classical period, has been totally renovated and restructured in its interior space by the architects Adrien Fainsilber and Claude Gaillard. Since 1990, the luminous atmosphere of the atrium serves as a ramp to the spaces where are presented the collections of art of the City of Clermont-Ferrand, whose Beaux-Arts collections have been preserved there. The various rooms are arranged on three levels around a central atrium surmounted by a glass roof designed by engineer Peter Rice. Its gentle slopes, evocations of the “architectural promenade” developed for the villa Savoye by Le Corbusier, punctuate the pace. In the shape of a palm tree, umbrella turned by the wind or cobweb, according to the imagination of the visitor (photo credits: Alexandre Plateaux).

On an area of ​​6000 m² and 7 levels of permanent exhibitions, more than 2000 works among painting, sculpture, decorative and graphic arts, photography are presented along a chronological and thematic path, in order to show a panorama of the Western art of the Middle Ages to the present day. A superb synthesis of several centuries of history and art, the museum of art Roger-Quilliot [MARQ], labelized “Museum of France”, is registered henceforth, by its programming of temporary exhibitions , and the multiplicity of its actions of mediation towards the public, like a cultural and tourist establishment essential for the regional metropolis of Auvergne. The MARQ is adherent to the international network of ICOM.

The Medieval Ages are represented at the ground floor with amazing pieces mainly from the XIIth Century. The twentieth century is also represented within an avalanche of colors… A wing dedicated to the art of contemporary Art, was opened to the public in late 1999. From a donation of a hundred works of figurative artists from the School of Paris, we will focus on presenting the creators of our era. Temporary exhibitions are regularly scheduled. In the basement, on two levels, are the contemporary collections. A large part comes from a donation made to the museum (a donation of nearly 400 artworks given by the Combe couple to the city in 2004) with paintings by Marie Laurencin (top left), Paul Rebeyrolle, Marcel Gromaire, Bernard Buffet (top right), Henri Cueco’s Richelieu inspired on Philippe de Champaigne, etc. The collection also includes a painting by Ernest Pignon-Ernest, a sculpture by Jean Arp, photographs by Nils Udo or Georges Rousse, as well as numerous lithographs (by Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau…).

 

Open all the year, from Tuesday to Friday, from 10h to 18h, Saturday and Sunday, from 10h to 12h and from 13h to 18h. Closed on Mondays, January 1st, May 1st, November 1st and December 25th. It also has spaces for temporary exhibitions, usually in connection with works of the museum or for the reception of contemporary artists. A documentation center is on the top floor of the museum.
