Once William Penhaligon escaped by train in 1860s, from his calm countryside in Cornwall, to reach the Londoner Dream, he wouldn’t have imagined the destiny of his perfume house. Quickly after, he settled his own barber\u2019s shop on Jermyn Street, close to his future partner from 1880, Mr. Jeavons, a hairdresser. Like his fellow barbers during the time, William Penhaligon was keen on designing his own range of beauty products to satisfy the wishes of his clients. Although, his perfumes were the more successful of this line, he became the official barber and perfumer during the Queen Victoria\u2019s reign. By the way, it was cited in his first warrant that his distinction was awarded as a \u201cdevotee of natural products only which was Penhaligon\u2019s trademark.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

Like we usually say in UK, “birthdays here are linked like buses in London, we expect one and there are two that happen at the same time!” Indeed, not only does 2020 mark the 150th anniversary of the legendary British royal perfumer Penhaligon\u2019s, but it also marks the 10th anniversary of their dapper fern scent, Sartorial. Directly inspired by the Savile Row, a street in Mayfair, central London, principally known for its traditional bespoke tailoring for men. <\/strong>By Alex Plato<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"2020<\/strong> is definitely an important year for the Penhaligon\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> perfumery<\/strong> House! This fine ancestral British<\/strong> institution, was founded in 1870 in London<\/strong>, by late William Penhaligon<\/strong>, reflects a certain passion to prolong a family<\/strong> tradition and an amazing legacy<\/strong>. Indeed, prior launching his own beauty<\/strong> entity, the founder was engaged as hairdresser and barber in the illustrious Piccadilly Turkish Baths<\/strong> on Jermyn Street<\/strong>, where he designed his own scents<\/strong>, lotions<\/strong> and potions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A personal project<\/strong> which notably gained prominence at the occasion of the later opening of his own salon<\/strong>, in the same street. Since his precious clientele<\/em> was really enthusiast about this homemade<\/strong> range, full of creative<\/strong> and innovative<\/strong> slightly perfumed<\/strong> goods, in order to define a new elegance<\/em><\/strong>. And thus, Penhaligon\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> was born, in a deep connection with the British Royal<\/strong> family, since William Penhaligon <\/strong>was furthermore appointed Royal Barber<\/strong> and Perfumer<\/strong> to the Royal Court<\/strong> during Queen Victoria<\/strong>‘s reign. Moreover, in 1903 the uprising House<\/strong> was granted its first Royal Warrant<\/strong> from Queen Alexandra<\/strong>, followed by an other Royal Warrant<\/strong> granted in 1956, by the Duke of Edinburgh<\/strong> and the last one, in 1988 from the hands of the Prince of Wales<\/strong>. These official certificates<\/strong> still prominently feature on the front of the Wellington Street<\/strong> store, a legendary address also labelled on the bottles<\/strong>. Moreover, Penhaligon\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> still pursues to supply the royal<\/strong> palace to this day, directly from their store, situated in Burlington Arcade<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

For you information, the royal tradition even pursues nowadays, since Prince William<\/strong> and his father, Prince Charles <\/strong>both share the same tastes for the perfumes<\/strong> of  fragrances. Indeed, their preferred juice is the Blenheim Bouquet<\/strong>, a detail that probably predicts a potential royal warrant <\/strong>soon bestowed by Prince William<\/strong>? For your information, perfumes<\/strong> were blended<\/strong>, bottled<\/strong> and ribboned<\/strong> around a square stopper, at the rear of the store<\/strong>, behind a transparent screen, so that customers could witness first hand this artisanal production<\/strong> process, whereas the still homemade bath oils<\/strong> were created in the basement. As far as we know, the quality<\/strong> of his products and his merchandising<\/strong> contributed to Penhaligon’s<\/strong><\/a> success, that convinced the fellow Mr Jeavons<\/strong> to ground a business partnership<\/strong>, in 1880. Then, the Penhaligon\u2019s fragrant shop<\/strong> eventually didn’t stop to flourish then, to the point where Penhaligon’s<\/a><\/strong> was particularly frequented by famous clients, such as the Persian Shah<\/strong> with let him charmed by one of the first creations, baptized Hammam Bouquet<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite William Penhaligon<\/strong> passed away in 1902, 3 weeks before the death of Mr Jeavon<\/strong>, the magic still lingers on. Indeed, his son Walter<\/strong>, an expert perfumer, <\/strong>took over the family business and finally in 1904, the worldwide renowned Penhaligon’s<\/strong><\/a> appeared for the first time without Jeavons<\/strong>. Furthermore, Walter<\/strong> Penhaligon <\/strong>was such a visionary traveler, who already imagined in 1902, the revolutionary Blenheim Bouquet<\/a><\/strong> (illustrated below), in tribute to the Duke of Marlborough <\/strong>and his Blenheim Palace<\/strong>. Thus, this male<\/strong> citrus fragrance<\/strong> broke the usual codes of that early 20th century period, when most men would have rather worn soliflore<\/em> fragrances<\/strong> such as a rose<\/strong> or violet<\/strong>. This innovative direction<\/strong> was completed in 1911, with the decision to include lavender<\/strong> essence in all of the masculine perfumes<\/strong>, to pay homage to his father’s original Hammam Bouquet<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

By the way, this item was already a tribute to these popular Turkish baths<\/strong> arising in London<\/strong>, especially for the aristocracy<\/strong>, since the 1860s. As a matter of fact, Walter<\/strong> Penhaligon<\/strong>‘s leadership and creativity shaped Penhaligon’s<\/strong> into the fine perfumers<\/strong> select club<\/em>, as we appreciate it nowadays. <\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"The typical British<\/strong> touch developed by William Penhaligon<\/strong> last for ages, and still amazes the nostalgic people of a United-Kingdom<\/strong> from yesteryear. Then, this legacy was correctly pursued by his son Walter<\/strong>, whose leadership and creativity shaped the Penhaligon’s<\/strong>, we know today.<\/p>\n

Thanks to her impulsion, this third prestigious Royal Warrant<\/strong>, as Suppliers of Toilet Requisites<\/strong> was finally allocated, from HRH The Prince of Wales<\/strong>, in January 1988. Furthermore, this much inspired lady entrepreneur tended to revive many classic fragrances<\/strong>, inspired by the original William<\/strong> and Walter<\/strong>‘s recipes.<\/p>\n
