Considered as the national drink, beer is a true symbol of Czech culture and its authentic Eastern art of living. For instance, the history of brewing in Bohemia dates back from the 9th century, where this beverage was originally mainly linked to monasteries and castles (like this neogothic Hluboka castle, pictured here). <\/strong><\/p>\n

Although, the first non-Trappist brewery was <\/strong>founded in 1118 and logically in 2008, the Czech beer obtained the European IGP label (Protected Geographical Indication), for a better protection of this ancestral know-how. Indeed, t<\/strong>his long-winded industry mostly relies on an abundant production of high quality hops and malt, and now operate about fifty breweries and more than 270 micro breweries. Many of these structures are now distributed in France by the Bi\u00e8res Tch\u00e8ques, and we’re glad to introduce these jewels from the East. <\/strong> By AP<\/em><\/p>\n

First of all, we thank this collective of breweries<\/strong> represented by Les Bi\u00e8res Tch\u00e8ques<\/strong><\/a>, the principal French<\/strong> importer of Czech beers<\/strong>, to have presented us their various prestigious or wannabe breweries<\/strong>. This company, located in Vend\u00e9e<\/strong>, also imports the local beer dispensers<\/strong>, conceived by Lindr<\/strong>. For your information, Les Bi\u00e8res Tch\u00e8ques <\/strong>is able to give to drink to everybody with its 25,000 HL of beers<\/strong> displayed per year, mostly distributed throughout France<\/strong> and through its different distribution networks<\/strong>. Now, let’s have a look among the choice<\/strong> offered of the different houses<\/strong>, all dedicated to pursue a real tradition!<\/p>\n

For your information, the majority of these Czech<\/strong> beers are famous for the quality and diversity of their three basic raw ingredients<\/strong> for beer production<\/strong>. Among them, you could count on various hops<\/strong>, fulfilled by multiple hop<\/strong> heads from female European<\/strong> hop plants. As complement, the choice of Barley<\/strong> is also important, before being transformed into Malt<\/strong>, since it requires some skills by a maltster <\/strong>and turning from green<\/strong> gold to liquid gold<\/strong>. Just after harvest, the barley<\/strong> is soaked (to encourage it to germinate) and then quickly heated with some warm air<\/strong> in a kiln<\/strong>, in order to pause the germination<\/strong>, before reaching the brewery<\/strong>. Especially cultivated in some <\/b>specific houses, malt<\/strong> takes part as a fundamental part in the resulting taste<\/strong>, colour<\/strong> and the aroma<\/strong> of beers<\/strong>. For instance, some following malts<\/strong> and cereals<\/strong> are used for brewing<\/strong>, such as the Pilsen light malt<\/strong>, as the basis of the Czech<\/strong> beer, the Bavarian<\/strong> (originally from Munich<\/strong>) is commonly used for providing the bread<\/strong> taste of beer<\/strong>, the Caramel Malt<\/strong> adds a caramel<\/strong> flavor and aroma to beer<\/strong>, a Colored Malt<\/strong> fills the typical dark<\/strong> color into beer<\/strong>, some Wheat Malt<\/strong> is a basic flavor<\/strong> and raw ingredient<\/strong> of the Weizenbier<\/strong> beer, Smoked Malt<\/strong> fulfills a fine smoky<\/strong> taste, Roasted Barley<\/strong> adds bitter coffee<\/strong> taste and Non-Malt Barley<\/strong> generally contributes smoothness<\/strong> to beers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Although the American<\/strong> version Budweiser<\/strong> has to be labelled as Bud<\/strong> in the main European <\/strong>part. Founded in 1895, its know-how has been pursuing through generations, for 125 years and thus, this brewery<\/strong> is nowadays the leading exporter of beers<\/strong>, and a major cultural ambassador<\/strong> from the country.<\/p>\n

Moreover, this region also gave its title to the IGP<\/strong>. For instance, their production<\/strong> is actually oriented by their brewmaster<\/strong>, named Adam Bro\u017e<\/strong>, a doctor<\/strong> specialized in yeast<\/strong> science and has been one of only ten brewmasters<\/strong> in their 125-year history. In the opposition, Tradi\u010dn\u00ed pivovar v Rakovn\u00edku<\/strong><\/a> is today one of the rare independent<\/strong> traditional breweries<\/strong> of the Czech Republic<\/strong>, unless their factory still employs artisanal<\/strong> methods. For instance, their beer<\/strong> is fermented in open vats<\/strong> and rests in horizontal tanks<\/strong>, during 40 to 60 days, according to the traditional double-mashed<\/strong> technology. These methods are as well ruling their different brands, such as Bakal\u00e1\u0159<\/strong> (since 1454) which are branded beers<\/strong>, characterized by a unique hop bitterness<\/strong>, full taste<\/strong>, emphasized color<\/strong> and rich firm foam<\/strong>. Although they are not distributed in France<\/strong> yet. The Primator Brewery<\/strong><\/a> (Pivovar Nachod) was founded in 1872 by a certain Master Brewer<\/strong> called Anton\u00edn LUTZ<\/strong>, and gradually became specialist in special beers<\/strong> with actually a selection of 15 permanent<\/strong> beers and 4 ephemeral<\/strong> beers. The structure has always been focusing on maintaining traditional Czech<\/strong> brewing methods<\/strong>, by selecting the best local malts<\/strong> and hops<\/strong>, melt into pure<\/strong> spring water<\/strong>. This source, also suitable for the preparation of infant nutrition<\/strong>, is mainly extracted from the state nature reserve of Adr\u0161pach-Teplice Rocks<\/strong>, situated in the protected landscape in the Broumovsko<\/strong> area.  From 1935, the first 12\u00b0 dark beer<\/strong> was marketed under the brand N\u00e1chodsk\u00fd Prim\u00e1tor<\/strong> and then under the name Primator<\/strong> which became more popular. In 2003, the brewery<\/strong> launched its range, based on a proper production technology, of top fermentation beers<\/strong>, with a good welcome on the market<\/strong>, so that the Weizenbier<\/strong> won the World Beer Awards<\/strong>, in 2013. This time, we get in touch with the unmissable Bernard<\/strong><\/a> brewery! For the joke, as you have maybe noticed, we can translate beer<\/strong> in Czech<\/strong> as pivo<\/strong>, and thus some French<\/strong> consumers may have nicknamed it Bernard Pivo<\/strong> as the famous French<\/strong> moderator. Whereas most of the Czech<\/strong> citizens would rather call it Pivo Bernard<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Originally, born as the Humpolec<\/strong> brewery, in the Moravian<\/strong> highlands, in the 16th century, the structure revived at the end of the Berlin Wall<\/strong>, in 1991. Indeed, three motivated associates Stanislav Bernard<\/strong>, Josef V\u00e1vra<\/strong> and Rudolf \u0160mejkal<\/strong> gave a new life to this highly potential factory<\/strong>, by creating the Humpolec<\/strong> family company. You knocked at the right door… Pivovar Matu\u0161ka<\/strong><\/a> is a brewery<\/strong>, founded by the passionate Martin Matu\u0161ka<\/strong> with the help of his grandmother<\/strong> and son Adam Matu\u0161ka<\/strong>. That’s why, thanks to their brand new brewing<\/strong> equipment, even including an automatic filling line<\/strong>, the factory<\/strong> grew up in possibilities and is now able to produce up to 30HL per day. Still in the new players, Pivovar Chroust<\/strong><\/a> has succeeded to reunite both a brewer<\/strong> and a beer lover<\/strong>, Karolina<\/strong> and Jirka Chroustovsky<\/strong> to start this amateur gypsy<\/strong> brewery project, in December 2016. After realizing how much fun craft brewing<\/strong> could be, Chroust<\/strong> was born and Jirka<\/strong> quit his job in the financial<\/strong> industry and joined Karolina<\/strong> to develop this genuine<\/strong> family craft brewery<\/strong>. With such a strong inspiration, in less than 10 years, the production of this factory<\/strong> has increased a lot and the total amount of brewed<\/strong> products has since exceeded the level of fifty<\/strong> items. Moreover, since 2019, the brewery<\/strong> has been able to produce a minimum daily volume of 30 hl of this precious juice<\/strong>. Not to mention that lately the Clock<\/strong><\/a> company really started to develop the maturing of its beer<\/strong> in oak barrels<\/strong>, surely in order to provide a proper style<\/strong> and taste<\/strong> and following this initiative, the new brand Fenetra<\/strong> has been created. For your information, the vast majority of these beers<\/strong> mature for months in wooden barrels<\/strong>, such as Cognacs<\/strong> (read our article here<\/strong>) or Whiskys<\/strong>, and then slowly ferment in their bottles<\/strong>.
