Venice is not only a city of museums but also a city of music and gastronomy! But the musical peak point seemed to be once more present during the carnival period, since it was supposed to be a really important period for the City of the Doges, since it was made to last longer some years ago… Extending from the beginning of October until Advent, then from December 26 until Shrove Tuesday, plus two more weeks on the ascent. That’s why, opera houses are so popular, from the Teatro San Benedetto, which was the most famous stage in the 18th century, the Teatro San Mois\u00e9, the Teatro Sant’Angelo of which Vivaldi was the impresario, or the Teatro San Samuele which welcomed the Griselda’s creation from the same Vivaldi. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Nowadays, music goes on in different sites, and notably in small-scale opera productions proposed by the Musica a Palazzo, in order to light up your night. We start our rejoicing Venetian<\/strong> tour at Musica a Palazzo<\/strong>. A real cultural association<\/strong> founded in 2005 with the desire to make of this Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto<\/strong> a place of meeting, experimentation and aggregation to disseminate and develop knowledge of opera<\/strong> culture (photo credits: Alex Plato).<\/p>\n

In case you look for an intimate moment to share with your loved ones, this Musica a Palazzo<\/strong> ensemble has developed an innovative way to appreciate your favorite classical artworks between the gildings of a typical Venetian<\/strong> palace. Therefore, the traditional opera<\/strong> scenery is here replaced by a stage where each act of the opera<\/strong> is represented in one different room<\/strong> in the palace, whose magnificent baroque<\/strong> decorations are a natural complement to the staging<\/strong> and would surely amaze you. Indeed, overlooking the Grand Canal<\/strong>, the Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto<\/strong> is located next to the much larger Palazzo Corner<\/strong>, basically reuniting two palaces, the Palazzo Barbarigo<\/strong> and Palazzo Minotto<\/strong>, later joined together. Built in the Venetian Gothic<\/strong> style in the XVth century, this first palace<\/strong> was owned by the Barbarigo<\/strong> family for several centuries, before being acquired by the Minotto<\/strong> and Martinengo<\/strong> families. <\/sup><\/p>\n

For your information, a couple of legendary artisans<\/strong> contributed through the years to design the interior spaces of this palaces<\/strong>, through perfectly preserved artworks<\/strong> which are still nowadays a source of admiration for researchers<\/strong> and art lovers<\/strong>. Counting on their inspiration some architectural jewels<\/strong> arose from the walls, such as the honorable involvement of Girolamo Mingozzi<\/strong>, illustrated by its molded explicit stucco<\/strong><\/em> alcove, made in a rocaille<\/strong><\/em> style.<\/b><\/p>\n

Thus, this artist designed a series of shield-carrying angels, <\/strong>overlooking the room<\/strong> besides mythological<\/strong> scenes depicted in pale colors with colorful animals<\/strong>, adorning the stuccos<\/strong><\/em> of the dining room<\/strong>‘s ceiling.<\/p>\n

Beyond this intervention, don’t miss a homonym Mengozzi Colonna<\/strong> who demonstrated his know-how on the central hall, designing some authentic Venetian<\/strong> terrazzo<\/em> pavings and painted the private 18th century chapel<\/strong>, also decorated with a Louis XIV<\/strong>-style elm wood flooring including inlays of olive<\/strong> burl and other precious woods<\/strong>. Don’t miss also the various artistic<\/strong> realizations of N.H. Pietro Barbarigo<\/strong>, the plasterer Carpoforo Mazzetti<\/strong> dit Tencalla<\/strong>, the painters Francesco Fontebasso<\/strong> and Gianbattista Tiepolo<\/strong> who started his work there in 1741, with a couple of masterpieces <\/strong>for the freshly Barbarigo<\/strong> spouses.<\/p>\n

\"\"Composed of three salons<\/strong>, enjoying a breathtaking panorama<\/strong> on the Grand Canal<\/strong> and as well on the Rio Zaguri<\/strong>, this precious edifice<\/strong> profited from embellishment<\/strong> works, occurring during the first half of the eighteenth century, again by the participation of artists<\/strong> whose fame and talent are still recognized today. The originality of this Musica a Palazzo<\/strong> notably resides in the conviviality of the audience limited to 20 privileged guests<\/strong> (who are invited to become a member of the association<\/strong>, benefiting of discounts<\/strong> for future representations). By the way, this Musica a Palazzo<\/strong> association gathers a bunch of internationally renown artists<\/strong>, who already had the opportunity to tour in the United States<\/strong>, along the performance of the so Italian<\/strong> show La Traviata<\/strong> in the Royal Pavilion<\/strong> for the 41st Brighton International Festival<\/strong> in the United-Kingdom<\/strong>, where the orchestra<\/strong> enjoyed a respectable critical success<\/strong> and even got awarded by a press prize<\/strong> from the Argus Angel Award<\/strong>, celebrating them as the best production<\/strong> of the festival<\/strong>. More recently, the company was honored to present The Barber of Seville<\/strong> at another festival in Potsdam<\/strong>, in Germany<\/strong>. Today, these two famous operas<\/strong> are still available at the Musica a Palazzo<\/strong>, along Rigoletto <\/strong>imagined by Giuseppe Verdi.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As far as we know, the Musica a Palazzo<\/strong> is more than a respected association<\/strong> but also acts as a cultural circle<\/strong>, where each participant<\/strong> in the regular activities, including evening performances<\/strong>, must be officially registered among its members<\/strong>. At glance, you couldn’t leave Venice<\/strong> without having a stop at the French<\/strong> named Bistrot de Venise<\/strong><\/a>. An original concept created in 1993 and impulsed by Sergio Fragiacomo<\/strong>, a history<\/strong> passionate, who paid many efforts to retrace the discovery of the ancestral Venetian<\/strong> cuisine, essentially from the Middle Ages<\/strong> until the Renaissance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Indeed, different fine dishes<\/strong>, mostly appreciated during this period by mainly people of the nobility<\/strong>, were adapted. As a matter of fact, each one pairs to a specific dish<\/strong> and thus, on the menu<\/strong>, you would naturally find the treasures of the past, from seafood<\/strong>, spices<\/strong> and antique fruits<\/strong>. We present you some of these delights<\/strong>, sometimes assembled altogether, for an unexpected sweet and sour<\/strong> wedding. A very open restaurant<\/strong> to the World<\/strong>, like its Venetian<\/strong>, such as this Collina<\/strong> wine, from Croatia<\/strong>, this vintage<\/em><\/strong> 2016 (with malolactic<\/strong> fermentation) is singular in the way that it was raised to an altitude estimated, between 300 and 600 meters, so close to the former Republic <\/strong>of Venice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This wine<\/strong> is notably suggested for the first course, deeply inspired by this ancient cuisine<\/strong>. That’s the case for the red tuna<\/strong> carpaccio, only caught in summer between the Corsica<\/strong> and Sardinia<\/strong> islands. As far as we know, this rare fish<\/strong> is rather seasonally captured, in order to protect this endangered<\/strong> species, and only in certain classified<\/strong> areas. Moreover, for a higher conservation, tuna<\/strong> is thus stored at a very low temperature (-60 \u00b0), which aims to eliminate all kinds of bacteria<\/strong>. A delicious fresh appetizer<\/strong>, completed by a vinaigrette<\/strong><\/em> made of green apples<\/strong>, dill<\/strong> and liquorice<\/strong>. Then came a veal<\/strong> tongue, and its garlic curry<\/strong>, marinated at low temperature, sifted with a reduction of basil<\/strong>. For a result that is crunchy on the surface and tender on the inside. All accompanied by a Barbaresco<\/strong> red wine, emblematic of Piedmont<\/strong>, made from its nebiollo<\/strong> grape (from fog). This inventiveness also expresses through these ancient rafiolli finotto<\/em><\/strong>, starring 3 kinds of local cheeses (30% tallegio<\/strong>, 60% asiago<\/strong> and 10% gorgonzola<\/strong>), as well filled with some smoked ricotta<\/strong>, almond<\/strong> and saffron<\/strong>. This creamy<\/strong> ensemble<\/em> is hydrated with a sage<\/strong> and rosemary<\/strong> sauce, plus a Friuli<\/strong> wine from 2016, composed of a blend of 3 indigenous grape<\/strong> varieties from this Italian<\/strong> region (mainly based on ribolla<\/strong> but also verduza<\/strong> and picoulota<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Adding to this, we invite you to try the fintotto<\/strong>, a real finto risotto<\/strong><\/em>, meaning a not true risotto<\/strong><\/em>, since it’s not cooked with rice<\/strong> but here with fennel<\/strong>. Garnished with some Sicilian<\/strong> prawns, cooked and raw scallops<\/strong>, sprinkled with liquorice<\/strong> and beetroot<\/strong>, as well as a reduction of basil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Not to mention the slice of Ombrina<\/strong> on a Jerusalem<\/strong> artichoke cream adorned with a julienne<\/em><\/strong> of meadow mushrooms<\/strong>, fine peaches<\/strong>, caramelized hazelnuts<\/strong> with cinnamon<\/strong> and rosemary<\/strong> oil.<\/p>\n

To end this dinner, why don’t you pick up one the sweet creations<\/strong>, that would make you deepen your knowledge about Venetian<\/strong> gastronomy? For instance, the smooth Panna Cotta<\/strong> with seasonal fruits<\/strong>, or the unmissable Torta Biancha Reale<\/strong>, based on a recipe by Bartolomeo Scappi<\/strong>, from the 16th century. In fact, a rich ricotta<\/strong> texture, reinforced by a powerful heart of ginger<\/strong>, but softened by a rose<\/strong> ice cream.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, choose the timeless Tiramisu<\/strong>, again in a revised version, by Bartolomeo Scappi<\/strong>, back in the 16th century, but according to the original recipe officially adapted in a Treviso <\/strong>restaurant, in the 70s. Associated with his brother Raffaele Alajmo<\/strong>, they grounded their family culinary venture, the Alajmo Group<\/strong><\/a>, spreading their spirit<\/strong> through ten establishments, a line of delicatessen<\/strong> products and even an event planning<\/strong> agency.<\/p>\n

Concerning the Caff\u00e8 Quadri<\/strong>, divided between the Quadrino<\/strong> (including the Grancaff\u00e8<\/strong>) downstairs and the Michelin restaurant upstairs, baptized Quadri<\/strong>. This ensemble enjoyed a recent renovation<\/strong> project, born from the wish of Massimiliano<\/strong> and Raffaele Alajmo<\/strong> to preserve the extraordinary heritage of the Caff\u00e8 Quadri<\/strong>, and to register the place into the history of Italian<\/strong> cuisine, as well as the contemporary<\/strong> history. To make this refreshing action possible, the team collaborated with the internationally renowned French<\/strong> designer Philippe Starck<\/strong><\/a>, with whom they have already collaborated on two other projects, aka the Caff\u00e8 Stern<\/strong>, a phantasmagorical bacaro<\/strong><\/em> in the heart of Paris, and the AMO caf\u00e9.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After months of huge works, the legendary 18th-century caf\u00e9<\/strong> went born again, revealing its native magic<\/strong>, then sublimated by a romantic<\/strong> and slightly surnatural<\/strong> atmosphere imagined by the fertile imagination of the Starck Studio<\/strong><\/a> and implemented by a set of exceptional Venetian<\/strong> artisans, displaying their incredible talent.<\/p>\n

“We wanted to restore Quadri<\/strong>, because certain decorative<\/strong> elements had deteriorated over the years, in particular the stucco<\/em><\/strong> in the caf\u00e9<\/strong> on the ground floor, which had disappeared under ten successive coats of paint. It was time to restore the place to its original splendor, through a contemporary reinterpretation worthy of representing Italian<\/strong> cuisine internationally, \u201dsaid Raffaele Alajmo<\/strong>, the Managing Director of the Alajmo Group<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Unless the Alajmo brothers<\/strong><\/a> and Philippe Starck<\/strong> have been knowing each other for ten years, this rehabilitation<\/strong> task was not easy, since the native Venetian<\/strong> essence needed to be preserved in a new perspective, showing here an evident influence of the French<\/strong> designer, within the revelation of the original decoration<\/strong> and architectural<\/strong> elements.<\/p>\n

That’s why, from the typical golden-brown fabrics<\/strong>, from the Tessitura Bevilacqua<\/strong> weaving workshop, covering the walls, the choice of the light intensity on the prominent Rezzonico Murano<\/strong> (dating from the 1930s) and the more recent Aristide Najean<\/strong>  chandeliers<\/strong><\/em> and in the chimerical collection of stuffed animals<\/strong> along the winged Lion<\/strong> of Venice<\/strong>, that all took up residence, the Quadri<\/strong> dream had to stay alive in one way or another. Moreover, Marino Folin<\/strong>, a local architect<\/strong> was appointed to lead the project, in coordination with the Venetian<\/strong> craftsmen chosen for this restoration<\/strong> mission. and the Superintendent<\/strong> of Archeology<\/strong>, Fine Arts<\/strong> and Landscapes<\/strong> of Venice<\/strong> in charge of heritage conservation<\/strong> issues.<\/p>\n

“The great cultural operation carried out during this restoration was to involve Venetian artisans, most of whom are the descendants of small family businesses dating from the 19th and 20th centuries” explains Marino Folin<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Apart from the decorative<\/strong> consideration, the Caff\u00e8 Quadri<\/strong> enjoys a perfect location in the old center of Venice<\/strong>, not far from the Laguna<\/strong> and therefore needs to often face the vagaries, inherent to the impressing phenomenon of acqua alta<\/strong><\/em>. These remarkable high tides<\/strong> regularly flood the city and the Caff\u00e8<\/strong> Quadri<\/strong>, especially since it’s located in the lowest part of the City<\/strong> of the Doges<\/strong>, and unfortunately at each of its passages, the water flowing leaves its traces on walls<\/strong> and furniture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rather than fighting the inevitable, Philippe Starck<\/strong> has decided to highlight the esthetic<\/strong> effects provided by the acqua alta<\/em><\/strong>, notably by choosing unvarnished raw brass<\/strong> for the table legs<\/strong>, the reception counter<\/strong> and all the other elements<\/strong> in contact with the ground. Thus, over successive floods<\/strong>, the metal eventually oxidized<\/strong> and changed color, becoming an inevitable witness to Venetian<\/strong> life. Adding to this, this acqua alta<\/em><\/strong> has also been illustrated in a graphic<\/strong> identity created by GBH<\/strong>, a British<\/strong> creative agency<\/strong>, which has also worked with Starck<\/strong> for more than twenty years.<\/p>\n

For instance, a significant effort has been achieved on the brass letters<\/strong> of the entity, becoming unhooked, cleaned and then reworked by a couple of craftsmen<\/strong> from the last Venetian<\/strong> foundry, the Fonderia Valese<\/strong>. A necessary rehabilitation for these ancient and amazing letters<\/strong> scarred by the signs of times, polished to obtain a brilliant golden<\/strong> color in reference to the sparkling looking of the Ristorante Quadri<\/strong>. The gourmet<\/em> restaurant<\/strong> located on the first floor and logically always preserved from high tides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitation of the walls of Quadrino<\/strong> and Grancaff\u00e8 Quadri<\/strong>, located on the ground floor, was carried out by numerous art restoration<\/strong> experts, particularly Anna de Spirt<\/strong> and Adriana Spagnol<\/strong>. Their common goal was to remove the different layers of painting<\/strong>, accumulated over time, to recover the original wonderful stucco<\/strong><\/em>, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.<\/p>\n

“These rugs<\/strong> are authentic paintings, it is impossible to describe them or to give them a name. They express what is in us that we ignore” adds Philippe Starck<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Last but not least, a flow of painted rugs<\/strong> arose to cover the restaurant<\/strong> floor, designed by Philippe Starck<\/strong>‘s daughter Ara<\/strong>, starring an interesting set of glamorous<\/strong> patterns. On top of that, this decoration is reflected by the transparent mirrors<\/strong>, conceived by the Barbini<\/strong> brothers, a family of master glassmakers<\/strong> established in Murano<\/strong> since 1570, which at the time produced all the mirrors<\/strong> for the Palace of Versailles<\/strong>. In parallel, the wooden<\/strong> frames of the windows overlooking St. Mark’s Square<\/strong> have been restored by a genuine artisanal carpentry<\/strong> company Capovilla<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Beyond this framework, the Ristorante Quadri<\/strong> embodies the contemporary expression of the Italian<\/strong> and more precisely Venetian<\/strong> gastronomic tradition<\/strong>, starring a premium offer of seasonal and fresh fish<\/strong>, fruits<\/strong> and vegetables<\/strong> with a daily delivery from the Rialto Market<\/strong>. Therefore, this upstairs establishment received its first Michelin<\/strong> star back in 2012. <\/p>\n

By the way, the new Quattro Atti<\/strong> menu favors sharing and conviviality, since each act includes several plates<\/strong> served at the center of the table, in order to be shared between guests. The latest Alajmo<\/strong><\/a> baby is untitled Amo<\/strong><\/a>, a borderless contemporary caf\u00e9<\/strong> located in a Renaissance<\/strong> refreshed atrium<\/strong> of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi<\/strong>. Completely restored by DFS<\/strong> (a subsidiary of LVMH<\/strong>), this historic edifice<\/strong>, situated close to the Rialto Bridge<\/strong>, became the first luxury shopping center<\/strong> to be settled in Venice<\/strong>. First constructed in 1228, the building<\/strong> was rebuilt between 1505 and 1508, into a very functional four-floor<\/strong> structure, after its destruction in a fire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
