Otherwise, you could as well admire&nbsp;the Porte Mars, one of the four gates that closed the city. This gate, which was included in the ramparts of Reims, was no longer visible and was therefore revealed more recently.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a city where the trade of wine, cereals and wool, of which Colbert developed the textile industry, we find traces of this economic dynamism scattered everywhere. In addition to the 33 kings crowned in the legendary Reims Cathedral, this royal city knew a luxurious destiny, as can testify the many old dwellings made of chalk slabs, from the surrounding <em>cray\u00e8res<\/em> (chalk pits). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nevertheless, after the bombings of 1914, 70% of the city was destroyed and unfortunately only 7 houses remained fully intact. For your information, nowadays many <strong>concerts<\/strong> and <strong>shows<\/strong> organized in this formidable <strong>agora<\/strong>, surrounded by plenty of outdoor <strong>caf\u00e9s<\/strong> and <strong>restaurants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the immediate vicinity of this <strong>forum<\/strong>, and since the end of the 12th century, the district of the <strong>Rue du Marc<\/strong> was mostly inhabited by the <strong>nobility<\/strong> and the rich <em><strong>bourgeoisie<\/strong><\/em>. It was also the center of the <strong>commercial<\/strong> activity of the city, that is to say the <strong>lodges<\/strong> of merchants, bankers and money changers.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous legendary mansions survived, as a whole or just partly before the 1914-1918 war. Among them, we find some jewels in the colorful <strong>Rue des Tambours<\/strong>, such as the newly renovated <strong>House of Musicians<\/strong>, whom the great 19th century architect <strong>Viollet-le-Duc<\/strong> considered to be one of the most beautiful <strong>secular<\/strong> statuaries of the 13th century in <strong>Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it seems that&nbsp;this <strong>house<\/strong> was erected during the <strong>King St Louis<\/strong>&#8216; century, around 1250, when a wealthy but unknown <strong>patrician<\/strong> ordered the construction of this bucolic <strong>facade<\/strong> and these five <strong>statues<\/strong> of <strong>musicians<\/strong>, symbolizing such an original scene. These <strong>artists <\/strong>were miraculously saved and sheltered in 1971, at the <strong>Saint-Remi<\/strong> <strong>Museum<\/strong>, after the endless bombardments of the <strong>1st World War<\/strong>&#8230; As you can see, the <strong>musician<\/strong> on the left side of the <strong>facade<\/strong>, plays the <strong>flute<\/strong> and the <strong>tambourine<\/strong>. In his right hand he holds a <strong>wand<\/strong> that appears to strike the <strong>instrument<\/strong>. This <strong>Renaissance<\/strong> project was initiated in 2015, with the decision to produce authentic <strong>reproductions<\/strong> of these different <strong>instrumentalists<\/strong> (kid player, flute), with the use of digital <strong>modeling<\/strong> (before making <strong>polyurethane<\/strong> duplicates), for the repair of this fragile <strong>facade<\/strong>. Moreover, behind it, the installation of an outdoor <strong>concert<\/strong> stage is planned in their common <strong>garden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This mysterious <strong>edifice<\/strong> could have only been refreshed with the support of the<strong> Municipality of Reims<\/strong>, associated with <strong>Champagne Taittinger<\/strong> and the <strong>Association Renaissance de la Maison des Musiciens de Reims<\/strong>. On top of that, still passionate about this restitution, he compares this fine <strong>renovation<\/strong> to the know-how of the original <strong>artisans<\/strong> from the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong> and explaining that: <em>\u201cFor me who am a <strong>historian<\/strong>, it reminds me of the construction sites of the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>. This edifice belonged in the 16th century to <strong>Nicolas Le Vergeur<\/strong>, a typical <strong>Reims<\/strong> bourgeois who transformed it and offered it the characteristics of a typical <strong>mansion<\/strong> from the <strong>Renaissance<\/strong>, thanks to specific interior and facade <strong>designs<\/strong>, arranged around a courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>Its then owner&nbsp;<strong>Hugues Krafft<\/strong> (1853-1935) decided to bring back a large number of objects, from his many travels around the World, clothing and photographic plates constituting a beautiful <strong>ethnographic<\/strong> <em>ensemble<\/em>.
