As we have already seen earlier in our previous articles, Reims was once an ancient fortified city, after being a Roman oppidum of which little remains, apart from the rue des Tambours and the Cardeau which were fully integrated into the old Roman city. Otherwise, you could as well admire the Porte Mars, one of the four gates that closed the city. This gate, which was included in the ramparts of Reims, was no longer visible and was therefore revealed more recently.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a city where the trade of wine, cereals and wool, of which Colbert developed the textile industry, we find traces of this economic dynamism scattered everywhere. In addition to the 33 kings crowned in the legendary Reims Cathedral, this royal city knew a luxurious destiny, as can testify the many old dwellings made of chalk slabs, from the surrounding cray\u00e8res<\/em> (chalk pits). <\/strong><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, after the bombings of 1914, 70% of the city was destroyed and unfortunately only 7 houses remained fully intact. A reconstruction occurred in the 1920s, involving many incredible Art Deco and Art Nouveau realizations, along the renovation of historical monuments, such as recently this Maison des Musiciens and its neighbor l’H\u00f4tel Le Vergeur. <\/strong>By Alex Plato<\/em><\/p>\n

Around the center of the former Market Place<\/strong> of Reims<\/strong>, where remains the vestiges of a very old Gallo-Roman<\/strong> forum, standing at the level of the ancient soil, stands a rich cultural<\/strong> offer. For your information, nowadays many concerts<\/strong> and shows<\/strong> organized in this formidable agora<\/strong>, surrounded by plenty of outdoor caf\u00e9s<\/strong> and restaurants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the immediate vicinity of this forum<\/strong>, and since the end of the 12th century, the district of the Rue du Marc<\/strong> was mostly inhabited by the nobility<\/strong> and the rich bourgeoisie<\/strong><\/em>. It was also the center of the commercial<\/strong> activity of the city, that is to say the lodges<\/strong> of merchants, bankers and money changers.<\/p>\n

Numerous legendary mansions survived, as a whole or just partly before the 1914-1918 war. Among them, the famous House of Musicians<\/strong>; the neighboring hotel<\/strong> which was later called the Palais Royal<\/strong> (Royal Palace); and of course the H\u00f4tel le Vergeur<\/strong>, with its vast room lit by tall mullioned windows and rosettes.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n

Not far from this Place du Forum<\/strong> (of the markets) stands a stone facade<\/strong>, which revealed a certain social success, whereas in a town, there were rather half-timbered<\/strong> houses. Among them, we find some jewels in the colorful Rue des Tambours<\/strong>, such as the newly renovated House of Musicians<\/strong>, whom the great 19th century architect Viollet-le-Duc<\/strong> considered to be one of the most beautiful secular<\/strong> statuaries of the 13th century in Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Thus, it seems that this house<\/strong> was erected during the King St Louis<\/strong>‘ century, around 1250, when a wealthy but unknown patrician<\/strong> ordered the construction of this bucolic facade<\/strong> and these five statues<\/strong> of musicians<\/strong>, symbolizing such an original scene. These artists <\/strong>were miraculously saved and sheltered in 1971, at the Saint-Remi<\/strong> Museum<\/strong>, after the endless bombardments of the 1st World War<\/strong>… As you can see, the musician<\/strong> on the left side of the facade<\/strong>, plays the flute<\/strong> and the tambourine<\/strong>. In his right hand he holds a wand<\/strong> that appears to strike the instrument<\/strong>. To his left, the other musician<\/strong> plays the kid<\/strong>, an instrument carved from a skin<\/strong> made from goatskin, while the other ones are a harp player<\/strong> and a fiddle player<\/strong>.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_1_placeholder\n

Adjoining the the also gothic<\/strong> styled Demeure des Comtes de Champagne<\/strong>, property of Taittinger<\/strong>, serving at the moment as reception hall<\/strong>, which also was used as a rear base the time of those delicate works<\/strong>. This Renaissance<\/strong> project was initiated in 2015, with the decision to produce authentic reproductions<\/strong> of these different instrumentalists<\/strong> (kid player, flute), with the use of digital modeling<\/strong> (before making polyurethane<\/strong> duplicates), for the repair of this fragile facade<\/strong>. Moreover, behind it, the installation of an outdoor concert<\/strong> stage is planned in their common garden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This mysterious edifice<\/strong> could have only been refreshed with the support of the Municipality of Reims<\/strong>, associated with Champagne Taittinger<\/strong> and the Association Renaissance de la Maison des Musiciens de Reims<\/strong>. However, the financial funding<\/strong>, came mainly from private<\/strong> sources, with the participation of around 170 generous donors<\/strong>, who reunited more than 1.2M euros, such as the patron Barbara de Portago<\/strong> who runs the Fondation de Versailles<\/strong>, along the Cr\u00e9dit Agricole<\/strong> and the German<\/strong> agent of Taittinger <\/strong>(photo credits: Alex Plato & Association Renaissance).<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_2_placeholder\n

Adding to this, this longtime collective wish<\/strong> was formalized with of course, the presence of the ensemble of the team<\/strong>, who was deeply involved in this project, and in the framework of the mayor of Reims<\/strong>, Arnaud Robinet<\/strong> and the Champagne Taittinger<\/strong> heir and honorary president of the house, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger<\/strong>, who is very active in the preservation<\/strong> of the Reims<\/strong> heritage, including its application in the stained glass<\/strong> workshop Simon-Marq<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

This “hundred year dream”<\/em>, still as said by Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger <\/strong>(at a cost of 972K euros), was supervised with the help of the architect Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Coqueret<\/strong> and Patrick Demouy<\/strong>, professor of medieval<\/strong> history at the University of Reims<\/strong>, who has devoted many researches about the history of his city<\/strong>. On top of that, still passionate about this restitution, he compares this fine renovation<\/strong> to the know-how of the original artisans<\/strong> from the Middle Ages<\/strong> and explaining that: \u201cFor me who am a historian<\/strong>, it reminds me of the construction sites of the Middle Ages<\/strong>. At last, this historical performance<\/strong> (to the new facade<\/strong> and the statuary<\/strong>), built in the thirteenth century, in the area between the Rue du Marc<\/strong> and Rue de Tambour<\/strong> (one of the oldest streets of Reims<\/strong>) was possible thanks to the stonemasons<\/strong> and sculptors<\/strong> of the Ateliers Bouvier<\/strong><\/a> from Avignon<\/strong> and Ateliers Tollis<\/strong><\/a> from Paris<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

By the time, those two structures took part of their inspiration on the nearby Demeure des Comtes de Champagne<\/strong>, one of the rare remains of the medieval<\/strong> architecture of Reims<\/strong>. This majestic palace<\/strong> was the residence of many passing crowned<\/strong> personae, especially during the occasion of royal coronations<\/strong>, which were held in the Cathedral<\/strong>. Today, as property of Champagne Taittinger<\/strong><\/a>, which restored this house of the thirteenth century<\/strong>, that still hosts receptions, exhibitions and concerts.<\/p>\n

Moreover, with this specific action, the city of Reims<\/strong> shows its desire to preserve and support its precious local heritage<\/strong>, with its sights set on becoming the designation of the European Capital of Culture<\/strong> in 2028. That’s why in parallel, further renovating<\/strong> projects are lead in this way, such as the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts<\/strong> (see our last article<\/strong> here<\/a>) and the Palais du Tau<\/strong>, which would close soon for 2 years of work.<\/p>\n

Just behind this Maison des Musiciens<\/strong> and its flamboyant Rue du Tambour <\/strong>(with eight different hues), still holding the history of Reims<\/strong>\u2019 mansions, let\u2019s get into the Hotel Le Vergeur,<\/strong> built in the 13th century, in a district once populated by rich merchants. This edifice belonged in the 16th century to Nicolas Le Vergeur<\/strong>, a typical Reims<\/strong> bourgeois who transformed it and offered it the characteristics of a typical mansion<\/strong> from the Renaissance<\/strong>, thanks to specific interior and facade designs<\/strong>, arranged around a courtyard.<\/p>\n

Its then owner Hugues Krafft<\/strong> (1853-1935) decided to bring back a large number of objects, from his many travels around the World, clothing and photographic plates constituting a beautiful ethnographic<\/strong> ensemble<\/em>. Thereafter, this avid collector<\/strong> acquired this Hotel Le Vergeur<\/strong> in 1910, notably in order to save its remarkable painted wooden ceiling<\/strong>, located in the Gothic<\/strong> hall from the thirteenth century, which was planned to a departure to the United States<\/strong>. <\/p>\nngg_shortcode_4_placeholder\n

This so called hall<\/strong>, has now unfortunately disappeared but after the First World War<\/strong>, this philanthropist<\/strong> financed the reconstruction of the building, largely destroyed by bombing, and installed the headquarters of the Society of Friends of Old Reims<\/strong><\/a>, an association he created in 1909.<\/p>\n

This Hotel Le Vergeur<\/strong>, as well Upon his death, his rich collections of furniture and art objects formed the core of the Mus\u00e9e Le Vergeur<\/strong><\/a>, which today offers a remarkable immersion in this bourgeois<\/strong><\/em> interior from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. This Museum<\/strong>, worthy of interest, reserves many surprises on every level. On the first floor, the reception<\/strong> rooms are arranged around a central hallway<\/strong>, the Salon des Sacres<\/em><\/strong>, along the boudoir<\/strong><\/em>, the smoking and the dining rooms<\/strong> which are decorated with opulent Louis XIII<\/strong>, Louis XV<\/strong> and Louis XVI<\/strong> styled furnitures<\/strong>. A very accurate reconstruction of this bourgeois interior <\/strong>was operated, with an elegant atmosphere in every part of the edifice, without forgetting the premium tableware<\/strong>, the luxury amenities<\/strong> in the bathroom and even one of the first water heaters<\/strong> by that time!<\/p>\n

The Hotel<\/strong> staff could eventually take advantage of the two very advanced<\/strong> kitchens for that time, and prepare the best dinners<\/strong> in town! This hypothesis could be verified with the help of the various menus, which took part Mr Kraft<\/strong>, hung on the walls. You could also admire an incredible complete service of porcelain<\/strong> of 261 pieces from Limoges, like this service \u00e0 l\u2019oignon<\/em> (onion service) from the Meissen<\/strong> factory, situated in Dresden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

His collections<\/strong> have been enriched each year, thanks to the generosity of many donors<\/strong>, including a precious complete and original series of engravings from Albrecht D\u00fcrer<\/strong>, named L\u2019Apocalypse<\/em> and La Grande Passion<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the same room, you could also admire the oldest illustrated representation of the King<\/strong> Henri III<\/strong>\u2018s coronation. This is a very rare witness of the French History<\/strong>, you should take some time on this memorable<\/strong> drawing!<\/p>\n

Last but not least, just remember the first exhibition at this Hotel<\/strong> Le Vergeur<\/strong>, associated with the team of the Reims Museum of Fine Arts<\/strong><\/a>, to highlight the power of arts<\/strong> in the history of the city, at the time of its reconstruction<\/strong> and just after the disasters of the Great War<\/strong>. It was during this difficult period that Reims<\/strong> citizens gathered forces to revitalize and rebuild this destroyed city.<\/p>\n

Standing on an orange background, this cultural path<\/strong> showed about fifty pieces belonging to Le Vergeur Museum<\/strong>, the Carnegie Library<\/strong> and, mainly, the Museum of Fine Arts<\/strong>. Thus, this exhibition<\/strong> evoked the face of the city in the 1920s.
