Established on a vineyard land, just outside Narbonne, the Domaine Ortola is exploited under the labeled of reasoned agriculture, with a harvest that only takes place by hand in respect for traditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus, in the midwood area of Cascastel, counting a lot of winemakers, the creation of clubs was encouraged on such preserved environments, situated 25 kilometers away from the Mediterranean coasts. This <strong>appellation <\/strong>is one of the oldest in <strong>Languedoc<\/strong>, established since<strong> April 1951<\/strong>, finding its name <strong>origin <\/strong>from the fourth<strong> milestone <\/strong>of the<strong><em> Via Domitia<\/em><\/strong>. For your information, those&nbsp;<strong>milestones<\/strong> were located every <strong>1481m<\/strong>, through most of the former <strong>Roman<\/strong> roads.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why, this <strong>territory<\/strong> is mostly made up of<strong> pebbles <\/strong>of white<strong> quartz <\/strong>and hard<strong> sandstone <\/strong>that the<strong> Atax <\/strong>river has been depositing since the <strong>Quaternary<\/strong> era, essentially from the nearby<strong> Corbi\u00e8res <\/strong>and<strong> Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es <\/strong>chain. This family affair is settled around the&nbsp;<strong>Ch\u00e2teau Notre Dame du Quatourze<\/strong>, which belonged to the archdiocese of <strong>Narbonne<\/strong> until the end of the 19th century, when the <strong>castle<\/strong> housed a former <strong>convent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>place<\/strong> name originally comes from the payment by <strong>peasants<\/strong> of a fourteenth of their vine <strong>harvest<\/strong> instead of the <strong>tax<\/strong> normally paid. As you can see, this <strong>vineyard<\/strong> is very <strong>historically<\/strong> rich, since it was planted by the <strong>Romans<\/strong> more than 2,000 years ago, but nonetheless remains fragile like its <strong>counterparts<\/strong>. Therefore, planted on <strong>clay-limestone<\/strong> soil and rolled <strong>pebbles<\/strong>, their <strong>vines<\/strong> are protected from the <strong>sea winds<\/strong> thanks to the <strong>Clape Massif<\/strong>. One of the main illustrations of this program is the <strong>foundation<\/strong> of a partnership in 2018 with <strong>Gr\u00e9gory Deso<\/strong>, an <strong>herpetologist<\/strong> member of the <strong>Herpetological Association of Provence Mediterranean Alps<\/strong> (aka <strong>AHPAM<\/strong>), which led to a preliminary <strong>research<\/strong> concerning the presence of specific <strong>reptile<\/strong> species, threatened on different sectors of the <strong>parcel <\/strong>(photo credits: Christophe Grousset &amp; Georges Souche).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>As far as we know, in 2019, a <strong>photo-identifying<\/strong>&nbsp;monitoring protocol was set up, always with <strong>AHPAM<\/strong> but also with <strong>Jean Muratet<\/strong>, herpetologist of the proactive <strong>Audio Ecodiv Association<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>This collaboration found a dual <strong>interest<\/strong>, in terms of participation in the <strong>preservation<\/strong> and <strong>research<\/strong> about this <strong>species<\/strong> evolution, along the strengthening of the awareness of <strong>vinery<\/strong> to <strong>environmental<\/strong> issues and the preservation of <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>. The complete involvement of each of the actors of this unique <strong>cellar<\/strong>, including the active participation of these solidary <strong>winemakers<\/strong> and their employees, supported by a significant amount of technical <strong>installations<\/strong>, make it possible to propose for each of the <strong><em>cuv\u00e9es<\/em><\/strong> a certain taste regularity.
