Facing the antique Maison Carr\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em>, you could admire the Contemporary Art Museum<\/strong>, also known as Carr\u00e9 d’Art<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which opened its doors on May 8th, 1993<\/strong>. This cultural center<\/strong>, whose name is naturally inspired by its neighborhood, houses an art museum<\/strong> and a central library<\/strong> in the same time (photo credits: AP).<\/p>\n

Indeed, this Carr\u00e9 d’Art <\/em>Museum<\/strong> as well houses a documentation center<\/strong>, specializing in contemporary art<\/strong>, a renowned bookstore<\/strong> and a very dynamic Association of Friends<\/strong> from the Contemporary Art Museum<\/strong>. This completes the regular offer of temporary exhibitions<\/strong> and regularly renewed presentation of artworks<\/strong>, accompanied by different types of entertainment<\/strong> and training activities<\/strong>.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n

By the way, this edifice<\/strong> has been designed by the British<\/strong> architect Sir Norman Foster<\/strong>, proud of famous realizations like the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank<\/strong> in Hong Kong<\/strong>, the Century Tower<\/strong> in Tokyo<\/strong> or the Sackler<\/strong> galleries<\/strong> of the Royal Academy<\/strong> in London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Therefore, the Carr\u00e9 d’Art<\/strong><\/em> has been conceived as a large rectangular glassed parallelepiped<\/strong>, displaying translucent lines, opening on a central atrium<\/strong><\/em>, which evokes the inner courtyards<\/strong> of houses in N\u00eemes<\/strong>. Without missing the glass roof<\/strong> conveying sunlight<\/strong>, able to highlight the various reflects from this building <\/strong>of nine levels, four of which are located above the roadway<\/strong>. The last two upper levels<\/strong> are reserved for the museum<\/strong> and constitute the presentation spaces for the permanent<\/strong> collections<\/strong> and temporary exhibitions<\/strong>.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_1_placeholder\n

With a surface<\/strong> area of nearly 2,000 m2, this unique edifice<\/strong> offers a modern framework<\/strong> illustrating Art<\/strong> current, spread from the 1960s<\/strong> until nowadays, including nearly 600 artworks<\/strong> gathered around three major axes<\/strong>. Those mention a panorama of French Art<\/strong> with the evocation of some important movements<\/strong> and sets of singular figures<\/strong>, along a presentation of a Mediterranean<\/strong> identity around artists<\/strong> from the south of France<\/strong>, but also Spain<\/strong> and Italy<\/strong>, without missing an introduction of Anglo-Saxon<\/strong> and Germanic<\/strong> trends.<\/p>\n

On top of that,  From the hall, the visitor<\/strong> is greeted by two impressive artworks<\/strong> that were especially designed for the Carr\u00e9 d’Art<\/strong><\/em>. Those are “Mud Line<\/strong><\/em>” by Richard Long<\/strong>, whose handprint<\/strong> on the wall in the material gives an undeniable pictorial<\/strong> dimension and “Gaul<\/strong><\/em>” by Ellsworth Kelly<\/strong>, whose vibrant opacity<\/strong> contrasts with the transparency<\/strong> of the building, this was the first monumental<\/strong> sculpture<\/strong> to enter French<\/strong> collections.<\/p>\n

Located in the heart of the medieval<\/strong> city, the Mus\u00e9e du Vieux N\u00eemes<\/strong><\/em> welcomes its visitors in the heart of its pedestrian<\/strong> streets. This museum<\/strong> sits in this charming building facing the cathedral<\/strong>, built between the 17th<\/strong> and 18th<\/strong> centuries, apart from being listed as a Historic Monument<\/strong>, nested between a courtyard<\/strong> and a garden<\/strong> with large dazzling facades<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Wearing a similar architectural<\/strong> style as the neighborhood..<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At the origin of the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux Arts<\/strong><\/em> of N\u00eemes<\/strong>, a first museum<\/strong> was settled in the heart of the Maison Carr\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em> in 1821<\/strong>. Therefore, this first museum<\/strong> of N\u00eemes<\/strong> wished to gather at that time, various Roman<\/strong> sculptures<\/strong>, along other collections of antiques<\/strong>, but also contemporary<\/strong> paintings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For your information, those artworks<\/strong> were originally extracted from previous exhibition<\/strong> halls<\/strong>, such as the Locuste of Sigalon<\/strong><\/em> or the Cromwell of Delaroche<\/strong><\/em>, even featuring old paintings<\/strong>, mainly issued from revolutionary<\/strong> confiscations. After this first project, another one was initiated to inaugurate a real Fine Arts Museum<\/strong>, on the Square de la Mandragore<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n

 This museum<\/strong> offers a chronological<\/strong> and geographical<\/strong> itinerary of pictorial<\/strong> art<\/strong>..<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

That’s why, the final museum<\/strong> was achieved in 1907<\/strong> and designed by the architect Max Raphel<\/strong>, in order to house this wide collection of paintings<\/strong>, which had become too large to be exhibited inside the prior Maison Carr\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From now on, this elegant museum<\/strong> used to display a large set of decorative<\/strong> elements, such as ornamental<\/strong> carvings, ironwork<\/strong>, stucco<\/strong><\/em> and even mosaics<\/strong>. For instance, this is the case of the superb antique mosaic<\/strong> masterpiece, depicting the Marriage of Admetus<\/strong><\/em>, and which was discovered in N\u00eemes<\/strong> in 1883, exhibited in the central Atrium<\/strong><\/em>.  This Atrium<\/strong><\/em> also presents a large number of paintings<\/strong>, notably mentioning the legend of Marc-Antoine<\/strong> and Cleopatra<\/strong>, by the painter Charles Natoire<\/strong>, back in the 18th<\/strong> century.<\/div>\n

The upper gallery<\/strong> invites you to admire countless realizations<\/strong> by Italian<\/strong> schools, from the 14th to the 18th century (starring Giambono<\/strong>, Bassano<\/strong> and Preti<\/strong>), but also Benelux<\/strong> artists, from the 16th to the 18th century (Bramer<\/strong>, Rubens<\/strong>, De Heem<\/strong>, Both<\/strong> and Pynacker<\/strong>) and of course French<\/strong> school, from the 17th<\/strong> to the 19th<\/strong> century.<\/div>\n
