Therefore, <strong>Romans<\/strong> called this place <em><strong>Aquis Calidis<\/strong><\/em>, meaning <em><strong>&#8220;hot waters&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>, in reference to the region\u2019s natural <strong>thermal springs<\/strong>. This is where from that time that he took no less than five <strong>cures<\/strong> there, from <strong>1861<\/strong> to <strong>1866<\/strong>, thus contributing to the <strong>popularization<\/strong> of the city.&nbsp;That&#8217;s one of the reasons why <strong>Napoleon III<\/strong> undertook some extensive <strong>renovation<\/strong> work to make <strong>Vichy<\/strong>&nbsp;as the queen of <strong>spa resorts<\/strong>, rivaling <strong>Bath<\/strong> in <strong>England<\/strong>, <strong>Baden-Baden<\/strong> in <strong>Germany<\/strong>, or even <strong>Carlsbad<\/strong> in <strong>Bohemia<\/strong> (better known today as <strong>Karlovy Vary<\/strong>).
