Picasso, the <em>Voyages Imaginaires<\/em> act proposes an initiatory walk, throughout the imagination and the curiosities of Picasso, throughout its flourishing creation (from 1901 to 1969), highlighting a series of his favorite inspirations (photo credits: Sylvie Roman).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two showcases for a trip<\/strong><br \/>\nDesigned and co-produced in partnership by the city of <strong>Marseille<\/strong> and the <strong>Reunion of the National Museums<\/strong> and the <strong>Grand Palais<\/strong>, this first flagship <strong>Provence<\/strong> exhibition, of the 2018 year, is spread over two exceptional sites, antagonistic yet but complementary, the <strong>Centre de la Vieille Charit\u00e9<\/strong> and the <strong>Mucem<\/strong>. The 18th and 21st century finally both connected to travelers and a little further, the former hospice, situated in this <strong>French<\/strong> port city, where the needy patients came from all horizons, the other modern concrete <em>totem<\/em> placed on a jetty, at the water&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p>Logically, for an exhilarating <strong>exhibition<\/strong> about the dreamed, fantasized, or real <strong>journeys<\/strong> of a major 20th century creator. Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler en&nbsp;1964. <br \/>\u00a9 Succession Picasso 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Furthermore, the <strong>Africa Ghost<\/strong> allows to discover an important correspondence with his relatives and friends, but above all, many sculptures could have been exposed (<strong>Mus\u00e9e National Picasso<\/strong>, Paris), along other <strong>African<\/strong> masks and reliquaries, but also famous proper designs, from the <strong>cubist<\/strong> and <strong>primitivist<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Picasso<\/strong> era (including those <strong>Studies about the Three Women<\/strong>, from the <strong>Chchukin Collection<\/strong>)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A journey in Provence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deeper in this act, we still dive into his <strong>Southern<\/strong> years, starring <strong>Braque<\/strong>, through <strong>Marseille<\/strong>, <strong>Sorgues<\/strong>&nbsp;and <strong>Aix<\/strong>, at the foot of the <strong>Sainte-Victoire<\/strong>, thanks to <strong>letters<\/strong>, <strong>postcards<\/strong>, <strong>sketches<\/strong>, <strong>watercolor drawings<\/strong>, <strong>feathers<\/strong>, <strong>ink stamps<\/strong> and <strong>paintings<\/strong> exchanged. The journey, or rather the travels continued in its deconstructed creation, emanating from the 50s and 60s, as hymns to youth and fire, plus fantasized and imagined women (we may count the <strong>Naked woman with the Turkish bonnet<\/strong>, <strong>The Women of Algiers<\/strong>, <strong>The Abduction of Sabines<\/strong>&#8230;), still the same women&#8217;s thematics in fact.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we may have pursued in the core of the <strong>Mucem<\/strong>, like a stranded boat anchored on the endless&nbsp;<strong>Marseille<\/strong>&#8216;s docks, surrounded by the blue flows of the <strong>Mediterranean Sea<\/strong>, so precious and inspiring to&nbsp;the <strong>Spanish<\/strong> painter.&nbsp;This work was the result of his contribution for different sets of <strong>Russian<\/strong>&nbsp;ballets with&nbsp;<strong>Serge Diaghilev<\/strong>, including <strong>Parade<\/strong> (1917), <strong>Tricorne<\/strong> (1919), <strong>Pulcinella<\/strong> (1920) or <strong>Cuadro Flamenco<\/strong> (1921)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, <strong>Picasso<\/strong> was also a <strong>costumer<\/strong> and <strong>decorator<\/strong>, for these shows, even making several trips to <strong>Naples<\/strong>, in order to study the masks and tradition of the legendary&nbsp;<strong><em>Comedia del Arte<\/em><\/strong>. He also established many collaborations with <strong>Italian<\/strong> painters from the futurist movement, such as <strong>Depero<\/strong>, whose influence is clearly undeniable.
