A beautiful panorama over the Finger Lakes wine region..
New York’s Finger Lakes and Long Island AVAs wines offer contrasting yet equally compelling terroirs. Together, these AVAs showcase the diversity and quality of New York wine.
The Long Island AVAs, shaped by maritime influence, allow estates like Channing Daughters in Bridgehampton to craft expressive wines such as their Pinot Grigio / Ramato, combining skin fermentation with layered fruit and floral notes. In contrast, the Finger Lakes AVAs, moderated by glacial lakes and cool climates, support elegant, aromatic white and red wines.
However, Buttonwood Grove Winery on Cayuga Lake produces crisp, Unoaked Chardonnay, Boundary Breaks on Seneca Lake highlights Riesling and Cabernet Franc with bright acidity, and Osmote, a small family winery, creates low-intervention Chardonnays, reflecting the region’s freshness and mineral character. We start this wine tour with the Channing Daughters domain, located in Bridgehampton, surrounded by the various vineyards in Long Island, where the estate cultivates their vines with an artisan and respectful approach, over 28 acres. Their dozen of grape varieties are hand-harvested and pressed in whole clusters, before being vinified in stainless-steel tanks before aging on the lees for about ten months, to fully express their unique microclimate. Their signature Pinot Grigio / Ramato cuvée exemplifies this philosophy, offering a sort of oraange wine, issued from skin fermentation and a layered bouquet of ripe peaches, apples, pears, white flowers, honey, and spice, all wrapped in a silky texture. By blending traditional techniques with innovative approaches, especially with seafood, delicate fish, mild cheeses, or delicatessen.
Therafter, located on the western shore of Cayuga Lake, still in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York State, the Buttonwood Grove Winery produces small-batch, hand-crafted wines on a family-owned farm. The estate grows several classic grape varieties and creates old-world inspired wines that highlight the unique glacial soils of the area. Among their white wine offerings, their 2024Unoaked Chardonnay stands out for its fresh, fruit-forward style without any barrel aging. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, this juice reveals vibrant orchard fruit aromas, followed by grapefruit and lemon notes on the palate. Its flavor then extends into a soft, lingering finish with hints of pineapple and white peach. With slight residual sweetness and low alcohol, this crisp and refreshing Chardonnay juice beautifully pairs with grilled fishes, seafood, cheese platters, and fresh fruits.
Founded in 2008, the Boundary Breaks has become a leading estate in the Finger Lakes, specializing in cool-climate varieties, such as Rieslingand Cabernet Franc. Located on the east side of Seneca Lake, the estate farms nearly 190 acres, using sustainability-certified practices, producing high-quality fruit, that has earned recognition from major wine publications. Here, their DryRiesling #239 is crafted from fruit, harvested later than usual for a dry style, allowing the grapes to develop rare tropical aromas. On the palate, the vibrant acidity balances this ripe character, resulting in a wine that is bright, expressive, and energetic. Fermented in stainless steel with selected yeast, it sits at 13% alcohol and remains technically dry, while maintaining impressive aromatic intensity. Boundary Breaks delivers a modern, elegant Rieslingthat reflects the terroir of Seneca Lake.
At last, the Osmote wine domain pays tribute to the elegance of the Finger Lakes and to the vital influence of these glacial lakes, which moderate their surrounding climate and allow vineyards to thrive. A small family winery, producing around 2,000 cases per year, since Osmotefollows a low-intervention philosophy, relying on native-yeast fermentations to best express the character of each site. The tasting room, set beneath a striking timber-framed pavilion with a slate-stone terrace, offers sweeping views over Seneca Lake and the surrounding vineyards. Their Seneca Chardonnay wine perfectly reflects this quest for natural balance. From the warm 2024 vintage, it shows a richer, more opulent style, with a soft entry, silky texture, and a lively acidic finish. Subtle French oak brings gentle spice and warmth, enhancing flavors of cream, peach, and ripe stonefruit. Therefore, dry, precise, and harmonious, this Chardonnaycaptures the fresh, cool-climate character of the Finger Lakes region.
